So you are new to the whole “get-a-new-website” thing. People are throwing around terms like “analytics,” “domain,” “hosting,” “server,” “backend,” etc. But what does it all mean? All these terms and everything you need to know about starting your website; it all seems so complicated and confusing, even overwhelming. You can practically see the mountain in front of you growing before your very eyes. Where do you start? What do you look for? What information do you need? Well, let us start by understanding some of the basic terms used in the context of web design and development.

As with any company and specific art form, there are terminologies to every process or concept, and we would like to invite you to take a look at the ABC of V4C; the terminologies we use and what they stand for, as well as a peak into the V4 Creative culture. Let’s Go!

Analytics

Analytics is the systematic process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to uncover insights that support better decision-making. Within analytics, there are tools that track website performance, such as Google Analytics. At V4 Creative we ensure that your website has Google Analytics to efficiently track your website’s traffic and performance and let you know what is going on every month. Please note that this option is only applicable if you choose to include this in your website design.

Analysis

Analysis is the process of examining information in detail to understand it, identify patterns, and draw meaningful conclusions. At V4 Creative we not only analyse your website to draw conclusions of its sufficiency (See back-end), but also specialise in making visual analysis (See front-end) to suggest improvements and future steps for an even more client-winning website.

Back-end

A website back-end is the behind-the-scenes part of a website that handles data, server operations, and application logic to ensure everything on the front-end works correctly. It is also where all of the editing takes place. At V4 Creative we offer website maintenance (See Website Maintenance) packages, ensuring that the back-end of your website stays up to date and working optimally.

Brand identity

Brand identity is the collection of tangible, visible elements – such as logos, colors, and, tone of voice – that a company creates to portray the right image to its consumer. In the context of website design, it refers to the visual, textual, and experiential elements of a website, such as logos, color schemes, typography, imagery, and tone – that consistently communicate a business’s personality, values, and messaging to users. At V4 Creative, we use your brand identity and also elevate it by embedding and showcasing it on your website to ensure your website communicates your business’s brand identity clearly and professionally.

Business

Business is an organisation or activity involved in providing products or services to meet needs while generating value or profit. V4 Creative is all about your business! We design your website to elevate, showcase and promote your business.

Cache

Cache is stored data that helps websites load faster. At V4 Creative we are all too familiar with cache, and when to clear the cache to make sure your website runs faster and smoother. This is why website maintenance is so important. (See Website Maintenance)

Concept Design

Concept design is the initial stage where the overall look, feel, structure, and user experience of a website is envisioned and planned before development begins. At V4 Creative, this is a key step in your website journey. We design a concept for one or two pages, giving you a clear preview of the look and feel – so you can confidently decide if it is the right direction for the rest of your site.

CTA (Call to Action)

A prompt that encourages users to act (e.g., “Contact Us”, “Buy Now”). At V4 Creative, call-to-actions are used on your website to enable users and potential clients to engage with your website and take action, moving from visitor to client.

CMS (Content Management System)

A platform to manage website content. At V4 Creative, our preferred CMS is WordPress, a highly capable and sufficient platform that creates your website and ensures it is scalable. This means your website can go from one page to an e-commerce whenever you are ready.

Design

Design is the intentional process of planning and creating solutions, structures, or experiences that are both functional and aesthetically effective. At V4 Creative we are focused on the following two designs:

– Website design: the process of planning and creating the visual layout, structure, and user experience of a website to ensure it is attractive, functional, and easy to use.

– Graphic design: the practice of creating visual content using typography, imagery, color, and layout to communicate messages clearly and effectively.

Domain

Domain is a unique web address that identifies and directs users to a website on the internet. At V4 Creative we register and host your domain – this is essential as this is the foundation for having a website go live. We ensure that you have the domain name that you want (if it is available) and that your website is found on that specific url (See URL).

Email

Email is a method of sending and receiving digital messages over the internet between individuals or groups. V4 Creative uses a ticketing platform which ensures that all agents receive all the emails. We aim to respond to your email within less than 48 hours.

Front-end

The front-end is the part of a website that users see and interact with directly, including its layout, design, buttons, forms, and other visual elements. At V4 Creative it is our mission to make the front-end of your website look and feel like your brand and transform visitors into clients.

Go Live

When the website is launched publicly. At V4 Creative, this is the most exciting part of the website design journey: when your website finally goes live! This means it no longer exists on a staging site (see Staging Site), but a public environment where anyone can find your website.

Health Check

Health Check is a systematic assessment of a person’s, system’s, or organisation’s condition to identify potential issues and ensure optimal performance or well-being. At V4 Creative, we perform regular health checks of your website, to ensure it stays up-to-date and fault-free. Homepage

A website can have many different pages and the homepage is regarded as the main entry page of a website. At V4 Creative, our focus is to build every page of your website to its full potential, and ensure that your main page, the homepage, is the hero of them all.

Hosting

Hosting is a service that stores a website’s files and makes them accessible on the internet. At V4 Creative, we host your domain in order to have your website with us and have proper website maintenance.

Keywords

Words people search for to find specific information. In the context of web design, it is the words people would search for, for example, on a search engine to find your website. At V4 Creative, we understand the importance of keywords, especially as we use it to set up SEO (search engine optimisation) (See SEO), which is highly important in order for your website to have a good ranking on search engines, such as Google.

Landing Page

A focused page designed to drive a specific action (e.g., sign-up or purchase). At V4 Creative we focus on different types of websites, and if you are not sure which website size or type you would like yet, you can always start off with a landing page – a page that reserves your domain and lets people know that your website is coming. Almost like a pre-website.

Navigation

The tools that help users move around the website. At V4 Creative, we give special attention to navigation around the website, as this directly speaks to the level of user-friendliness (See UX). Navigation tools can include, but are not limited to, menu’s, buttons, arrows, links, pop-ups etc.

Plugins

Add-ons that extend functionality (common in WordPress). At V4 Creative our website maintenance packages ensure that all of the plugins on your website stay up to date and keep your website working in top shape (See Website Maintenance).

Reports

Reports are structured documents that present information, analysis, and findings on a specific topic to inform decision-making or communicate results. At V4 Creative we take reports very seriously, as it is the very tool that showcases if our collaborative efforts are actually working. We provide monthly reporting with selected Website Maintenance Packages.

Responsive Design

A website that adapts to mobile, tablet, and desktop screens. At V4 Creative, this is one of the aspects that sets us apart from most website generators and applications – the fact that your website will be responsive and will display properly on all of the different devices.

Reviews

Reviews are evaluations or feedback shared by users or customers about a product, service, or experience. At V4 Creative when creating or revamping websites for our clients, we can also incorporate Google reviews on their homepage. Revisions

The amount of allowed changes during the design process. At V4 Creative we allow for different revision round options, depending on the design package you choose.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

In web design and development, SEO is the practice of structuring, building, and optimising a website so that search engines can easily understand, index, and rank it – helping the site appear higher in search results and attract more organic traffic. At V4 Creative, we ensure that on-page SEO is completed before a website goes live. Ongoing SEO packages are available upon request.

Server

In web design and development, a server is a computer or system that stores, processes, and delivers website content to users’ browsers when they request it. At V4 Creative we have a dedicated server that ensures that your website is hosted and secure.

Sign-off

Client approval before moving to the next phase. At V4 Creative, there are two key sign-off stages: the completion of the concept design and the completion of the final website.

Social Media

Social Media is a collection of online platforms and tools that allow people to create, share, and interact with content and connect with others. At V4 Creative we use numerous social media platforms to share behind-the-scenes, our team, tips and testimonials. Solutions

Solutions are methods, services, or strategies designed to solve problems or meet specific needs. At V4 Creative we have all of your media and design solutions – we do what we do best so that you can do what you do best.

Staging Site

A test version of a website before going live. At V4 Creative, all new websites are first built on a staging site. Once the client approves the site for launch, we transfer it to the live domain, where it becomes publicly accessible.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are arrangements in which a person or organisation regularly pays for access to a service, product, or content over a set period of time. At V4 Creative we utilise subscriptions to make payment easier and more sufficient. Subscriptions are used for monthly payments, like paying off your website, paying for website maintenance or creating a retainer for website content support. We also use a subscription system for annual domain renewals – which means you subscribe and the system automatically deducts the payment.

Support

Support is the assistance or help provided to address problems, answer questions, or ensure the effective use of a service, product, or system. At V4 Creative all support-related queries can be emailed to support@v4creative.com. We aspire to provide effective support, as well as answer your questions and enquiries.

SSL Certificate

Keeps your website secure (you’ll see “https://”). At V4 Creative we ensure that your website has an SSL certificate to keep your website secure.

Theme

A pre-designed website layout or template. At V4 Creative we use a theme called Avada. Avada is a scalable and aesthetically pleasing WordPress theme that is used for most of our websites. For our smaller business packages, we offer WordPress themes that can be selected from a curated range of options.

UI (User Interface)

The visual design of a website—how it looks. At V4 Creative, we focus on creating aesthetically pleasing websites that clearly reflect and showcase your brand identity.

URL

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address used to locate a specific resource on the internet—like a website, page, image, or file. At V4 Creative , once we make your website live you also have a unique URL that anyone can search to find your awesome website immediately.

UX (User Experience)

How a user feels when navigating the website—ease, flow and clarity. At V4 Creative we are not only focused on how a website looks but also how it functions – user experience is what makes visitors turn into clients.

Website

A website is a collection of interconnected web pages, hosted online, that provide information, services, or interactive experiences to users. At V4 Creative, we specialise in websites of all sizes—from small business sites to fully developed platforms for established brands.

Website Content Support

Website content support is the ongoing assistance in editing, updating, and managing a website’s content to ensure it remains accurate, engaging, and effective (Also see Front-end). At V4 Creative we can assist you with your website content support needs. This specifically refers to adding and editing news articles, blogs, hero banners, images and text. This service is available at an additional cost after the website has been signed off.

Website Maintenance

Website Maintenance is the ongoing process of updating, monitoring, and optimising a website to ensure it remains secure, functional, and up to date (also see Back-end). At V4 Creative we strongly encourage you to subscribe to one of our website maintenance packages to ensure that your website remains healthy and well taken care of. Website Pages

A website page (often called a web page) is a single document or screen on a website that a user can view in a browser. It is one “page” of content within a larger website – like a page in a book. Each page has its own unique URL (web address). It contains content such as text, images, videos, or forms. Multiple pages together makes up a website. At V4 Creative we design web pages individually, in order to form the whole website. You can choose how many website pages you would like to have on your website, and because we use the Avada WordPress theme (See Theme), your website is scalable and we can add and subtract pages easily.

Welcome is a friendly greeting or reception extended to someone arriving or joining a place, group, or experience. At V4 Creative our goal is to make you feel welcome and create website designs that will make your clients feel at home! You’re welcome!
